Sung (Steve) Kwon, MD, is a surgical oncologist who specializes in treating locally advanced and metastatic cancers of the abdomen. He focuses on procedures such as cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and he performs both traditional and minimally invasive surgeries for tumors in the digestive tract, soft tissue, and skin. “Surgical oncology is a team sport,” Dr. Kwon says. “It takes multiple specialties working in synergy to fight and advocate for patients. There is nothing more gratifying than helping patients fight and win against cancer, to get back to their lives and families.”

Dr. Kwon’s research centers on improving personalized cancer treatment strategies through multiperspective models that use clinical, epidemiological, imaging, and genomic data. By refining risk stratification and predicting responses to therapy, he aims to create more precise screening strategies and targeted decisions for patients, including older adults with cancer. “The treatment of cancer is always evolving,” he says. “Being part of a community that continually strives to do more for patients keeps me motivated.”

“The camaraderie of my colleagues—some of the brightest and most skilled physicians I know—is my favorite part of the job,” Dr. Kwon adds. “We work together to give our patients the best care possible, and it’s vital for patients to know they have a dedicated team on their side.”

Dr. Kwon completed his medical training and went on to a general surgery residency at the University of Washington, followed by a complex general surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
