Joshua A. Copel, MD, is an expert in prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy who has pioneered new diagnostic techniques for unborn patients and their mothers. He is also an expert in both surgical and noninvasive approaches to maternal-fetal care.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my particular field is when I really can say we made a difference,” he says. “It’s just great to say this kid wouldn’t be here if not for what we did prenatally.” Maternal-fetal doctors have been able to do more for patients partly because of the increasing quality of prenatal images that allow doctors to better plan for treatment after a baby is born. An active researcher, he looks forward to a future without invasive tests, where doctors can predict problems like Down’s syndrome with something as simple as low-cost blood test.
Dr. Copel is a professor and vice chair of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine, and professor of pediatrics. He also serves as associate chief medical officer for Yale Medicine. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which provides Connecticut Magazine’s annual Top Doctors list, has recognized Dr. Copel as one of the best doctors in the state.
