Yale researchers have introduced countless medical and health advances over the last century, including the first success with antibiotics in the United States and the first use of chemotherapy to treat cancer. Yale scientists identified Lyme disease and discovered genes responsible for such disorders as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, dyslexia and Tourette's syndrome. We did early work on the artificial heart and developed the first insulin pump to treat diabetes. Our investigators are also world-renowned for basic science research, including groundbreaking discoveries about how the cell and its components function at the molecular level.

Yale is among the premier research and training institutions in the country. As part of this rich tradition, the areas of research in the Department of Anesthesiology encompass both “traditional” areas of anesthesia research and new areas of science and medicine.

Our department conducts cutting-edge basic science and clinical research in areas that include:

  • Vascular biology, as it pertains to peri-operative outcomes and sepsis, as well as stroke, including tissue engineering the regeneration of blood vessels that are damaged by injury or disease, as well as new strategies for regenerating entire segments of functional lung for the treatment of such end-stage lung diseases as emphysema and cystic fibrosis
  • Identifying the neural mechanisms of pain and itch, including investigating the use of nano-technology for drug delivery
  • Examining the impact of interventions before, during and after surgery on anesthetic outcomes
  • Studying a noninvasive method for blood volume determination
  • Developing a novel technique for temperature monitoring
  • The impact of cardiac assist devices on neural and humoral factors
  • The impact of regional anesthetic techniques on ovarian cancer recurrence
  • Evaluation of pharmacological agents to reduce agitation when emerging from anesthesia in pediatric patients
  • Several novel agents that are active in the cardiovascular and blood coagulation systems
  • The impact of old age on anesthetic dosing requirements, stability during surgery and outcomes

Looking at the practice of anesthesia holistically, we are studying the environmental impact of disposable items and exhausted gasses that are used in anesthetic practice, with a goal of reducing the environmental effects of these agents. Working together, we’re breaking new ground and forging new links in science and medicine.
