Smilow Multidisciplinary Pain Program
The Smilow Cancer Hospital Multidisciplinary Pain Program is available for patients with complex, difficult-to-manage cancer-related pain. Our multidisciplinary team includes experts from pain medicine, interventional radiology, palliative care, and integrative medicine specialties who provide integrative pain medicine to patients with pain as a result of their cancer treatments, including radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, as well as pain caused by the disease itself. Our program offers a variety of pain management options that are personalized to fit the needs of individual patients. These options may include oral pain medications and/or interventional procedures, such as trigger point injections and nerve blocks. The pain medicine team also offers implanted pumps that deliver pain medications directly to the source of pain in the body. We provide anesthetic and pain relief care for thousands of children each year undergoing surgery, and those who are patients at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. Our pediatric pain management team works in collaboration with pediatricians, surgeons, and other clinicians to manage children's pain after surgery or injury. As with adults, children can suffer from a variety of pain problems. Their experience with pain can vary based on several factors, such as previous experience with pain, personality, expectations, and cognitive ability.Our multidisciplinary team controls pain through both medication and nondrug techniques. Our specialists are available for consultation for any child admitted to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital whose pain is not adequately controlled.General Neurology
We evaluate and treat all neurological conditions, and make sure patients are seen by appropriate subspecialists within the Department of Neurology to provide the best possible care. The Yale Headache and Facial Pain Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches and facial pain in adolescents and adults. The Lumbar Puncture Clinic provides analysis to physicians for conditions related to spinal fluid abnormalities. We perform routine testing of cerebral spinal fluid, as well as more specialized testing for demyelinating disease, neoplasms, inflammatory conditions, and infections. We also provide large-volume spinal taps for the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus. The Neurology Urgent Access Clinic provides expedited evaluation of patients seen in the emergency room as well as those referred from physicians requiring an urgent assessment.
