John "Sully" Sullivan, MD
Biography
John “Sully” Sullivan, MD, is a pediatric cardiologist who specializes in the care of children with heart conditions. He focuses on diagnosing and treating a variety of heart issues in children, using noninvasive techniques such as transthoracic echocardiography (a painless ultrasound that scans the heart from over the chest) and transesophageal echocardiology (in which a probe is inserted down the esophagus to make high-resolution images of the heart’s valves and structures).
Dr. Sullivan employs a range of diagnostic approaches to ensure comprehensive care for his young patients. In his role as an assistant professor of pediatrics (cardiology) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Sullivan has expertise in exercise physiology and advanced imaging techniques. He is also dedicated to the advancement of medical education, actively contributing to the training of medical students, residents, fellows, and pediatricians throughout Connecticut.
“The part I love most about my job is getting to take one of the most complex systems in the body—the cardiovascular system—and make it accessible for children and their families,” he says. “Often times, this involves drawing pictures of the heart, but it all depends on why a particular family came to see me and how much they want to know. One of the most rewarding feelings I get is when the family comes with questions and concerns related to the heart and leaves feeling like they understand what is happening and what can be done to make it better.”
Dr. Sullivan received his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine. He further specialized with a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC.
