Biography

Jasmine Gujral, MBBS (a medical degree awarded in several countries outside of the U.S.) is a pediatrician who specializes in endocrine system disorders. She completed her medical training in India and the U.S.

She treats patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, growth disorders, puberty abnormalities, obesity, conditions related to sex development, bone and mineral disorders, hypoglycemia, and other disorders related to the adrenal, parathyroid, thyroid, and pituitary glands.

“Hormones affect every system of the human body,” Dr. Gujral explains. “The endocrine system is very intelligent and works like Bluetooth technology in that various hormones throughout the body communicate with each other.”

Dr. Gujral appreciates providing care for a diverse age range of patients—from newborns to young adults. “I like the opportunity to form close relationships with children and their families” she says. “Also, a diagnosis early in a child’s life can make a momentous difference in a child’s quality of life” For example, a child born with congenital hypothyroidism who doesn’t receive treatment as soon as possible could suffer from a severe intellectual disability. However, if treated early, a child can lead a very normal life,” Dr. Gujral says.

When patients are diagnosed with an endocrine disorder, Dr. Gujral offers reassurance by letting them know that their care team routinely treats patients with their condition, even rare ones. “I let them know we are there for them and share inspiring stories of how other patients have succeeded in not letting these disorders hold them back,” Dr. Gujral says.

Besides providing patient care, Dr. Gujral is leading her division in a pilot program called Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO). This tele-mentoring program is designed to empower pediatricians working in community clinics and hospitals by providing them with interactive video sessions with specialists throughout the country. These physicians are then better able to diagnose and treat patients with complex endocrine disorders.

Pediatric endocrinology as a specialty is rewarding, Dr. Gujral says. “The joy of pediatrics is witnessing children you have cared for grow into healthy adolescents and adults, knowing that you played a role in helping them enjoy a life of health and happiness.”
