Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services
The Intensive In-home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS) program at Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) supports families at home when a child or teen is struggling with severe behavioral health issues. IICAPS team members are trained mental health providers. They work with families in the home and community to determine the best supports and services to provide for each child or teen.
Services
Our two-person IICAPS teams provide an initial evaluation visit when families start the program. They then meet with the family for five to six hours per week over three weekly visits, for four to six months. They may collaborate with a child’s healthcare providers, mental health providers, teachers, school administrators, extended family, or other community agencies. Families have access to a crisis response clinician by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Sometimes, families join IICAPS after a child or teen is treated for behavioral health or psychiatric concerns in the hospital. This includes the emergency department (ED) or an intensive inpatient program like the Children’s Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CPIS). Other children need more care after receiving therapy through a high-intensity outpatient program at the Children’s Day Hospital Children’s Day Hospital or extended-day treatments (EDT) that take place after the school day. Still others learn about IICAPS after they are evaluated by Mobile Crisis Intervention Services (MCIS). Parents can access MCIS by dialing 211 and pressing 1.
