Children’s Psychiatric Inpatient Service

Children’s Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CPIS) is an integral part of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH), run in partnership with Yale Child Study Center (YCSC). We provide care to children through the age of 13 who have been admitted to the hospital for intensive behavioral health care. Older adolescents receive similar care through the Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry Program.

Services

Children are admitted to CPIS for different reasons. An emergency department evaluation may reveal that a child is at risk of harm to themselves or others. They may be experiencing unsafe behavioral outbursts that require immediate attention.

CPIS serves as the intensive care unit for pediatric mental health conditions. On the unit, providers help manage various symptoms and conditions. Examples include suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, homicidal thoughts, self-harming behaviors, and aggression.

Program Information

As soon as a child is admitted to CPIS, a comprehensive evaluation is given so they can quickly receive the right treatment. This helps patients improve more rapidly, which may decrease the number of days spent in the hospital. All school-aged children in the CPIS unit attend a state-accredited special education school on weekdays. Learn more about CPIS.

Referrals

Children are admitted to CPIS following evaluation in the emergency department. In rare instances, a youth may be transferred to CPI from another inpatient unit. Youth are not admitted directly to CPIS without having already been evaluated in an emergency department.
