Tinea capitis, also known as ringworm of the scalp, is a fungal infection that affects the scalp, hair shafts, and follicles. It is caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi that can invade and break down keratin in hair and skin. The condition presents as scaly, itchy, and red patches on the scalp, often accompanied by hair loss in the affected areas.
