Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is a precursor stage of multiple myeloma, characterized by the presence of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and an increased level of monoclonal protein in the blood. SMM is generally asymptomatic and does not cause significant organ damage or bone lesions, but it carries a risk of progressing to active multiple myeloma or other plasma cell disorders.
