Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the shape of red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. Red blood cells, which are normally round and flexible, become rigid and sickle shaped. These misshapen cells can cause blockages in blood vessels resulting in pain, anemia, and other complications.
