Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Definition

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that is implanted in patients with weakened or failing hearts to help the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart, pump blood more effectively. It is used as a temporary support for patients awaiting heart transplantation or as a long-term solution for those who are not eligible for transplantation.
