Basal joint arthritis, also known as thumb arthritis, is a degenerative condition affecting the joint at the base of the thumb (carpometacarpal joint). It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the joint wears away, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion in the thumb.
