he/him/his
Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Biography

Matthew Kusulas, MD, is a pediatric emergency medicine specialist who provides care to children with a range of acute medical conditions. He uses a variety of non-invasive techniques to diagnose and treat pediatric emergencies, including point-of-care ultrasound to enhance clinical care. He treats children and caregivers with compassionate and comprehensive care during critical moments.

Dr. Kusulas knew all along that he wanted to work with kids before settling into emergency pediatric medicine. Part of his job is to ease the anxiety of both parents and his young patients in highly stressful situations. To parents, he says, "Let's work together to make sure your child is safe." When dealing with the kids, his approach is “simply being honest, methodical, and calm, making sure to engage them in the process. I am known for taking time to ‘get the history’ from the kid, which I think begins the process of building trust, and alleviating at least some of their anxiety.”

As an associate professor of pediatrics (emergency medicine) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Kusulas is involved in research centered on curriculum development and the assessment of teaching methods. “I love to watch younger clinicians develop their skills and become full-fledged pediatric emergency medicine clinicians!” he says.

Dr. Kusulas received his medical degree from Drexel University and pursued a residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. He further specialized with fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine at AI duPont Hospital for Children and in emergency ultrasound at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York/Columbia University Medical Center.
