Lynelle Schneeberg, PsyD, is a psychologist at Yale Medicine specializing in behavioral sleep medicine.  She treats sleep disorders such as insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders in children, adolescents and adults.

She completed her internship at the West Haven VA Medical Center and specialized in behavioral medicine, specifically in the areas of cardiac rehabilitation and chronic pain. She then completed her residency at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, where she evaluated and treated patients receiving a variety of types of physical rehabilitation. She developed a strong interest in Sleep Medicine and so she went on to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, making her one of only about 200 psychologists in the country with this type of specialized training in Sleep Medicine.

There are many sleep disorders that may benefit from some sort of behavioral therapy. For example, the practice standard for treating chronic insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Patients with circadian rhythm disorders benefit from behavioral changes as well.

When Dr. Schneeberg works with patients, she begins by carefully assessing their current sleep habits and hygiene along with their beliefs about sleep. She uses this information to customize a plan to address their sleep issues. This plan is reviewed each week and revised as necessary and, once better sleep skills are acquired, a patient can often be tapered off of any sleep medications.  “Sleep problems like insomnia are incredibly common but can also be quickly resolved with a targeted therapy like CBT-I,” she says.

Dr. Schneeberg is also the author of a forthcoming book about how to improve children's sleep.
