Biography

Karen Xiao, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and an assistant professor in the Section of Digestive Diseases at Yale School of Medicine.

As a general gastroenterologist, she is dedicated to diagnosing and treating a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions and symptoms, including heartburn, acid reflux, dyspepsia, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. She performs procedures such as colonoscopies and upper endoscopies to manage these conditions effectively.

Dr. Xiao is passionate about improving healthcare access and outcomes for underserved communities and serves as the director of the Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers for Digestive Diseases.

“I feel privileged to hear my patients' stories every day, especially those who have historically faced barriers to specialty care, and to be the one providing that care and helping make it more accessible,” she says. She collaborates closely with other providers, including physicians, nutritionists, mental health care providers, and community organizations, to offer comprehensive and holistic care.

Dr. Xiao received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a gastroenterology fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.
