Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, is a pathologist who specializes in diagnosing liver and gastrointestinal conditions, as well as lung diseases. Dr. Zhang is also a fourth-generation physician. “My father and grandfather and grandfather’s father were doctors,” he says.
For his doctorate research, Dr. Zhang studied emphysema, a lung condition that causes shortness of breath. “I still continue lung research through collaborations with other labs at Yale in the area of lung pathology, including acute lung injury,” Dr. Zhang says. In addition to these diverse specialties and interest, Dr. Zhang also contributes to research on how to better classify the different types of colon cancer.
“My diagnosis can help the clinician to choose the best treatment and management of the disease,” Dr. Zhang says. “That’s the part I most enjoy about my job.”
At Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Zhang is an associate professor of pathology.
