Raffaella Morotti, MD, is a pathologist who specializes in diagnosing serious health complications that affect the fetus. Some babies survive these conditions, explains Dr. Morotti. However, if a pregnancy is terminated early, or a baby dies after birth, Dr. Morotti will perform an autopsy. She is associate director of the Yale Medicine autopsy service and director of pediatric pathology.

“It’s important to me to understand an underlying disease and provide a diagnosis to a parent,” Dr. Morotti says.

In addition to her perinatal medicine subspecialty, Dr. Morotti also specializes in diagnosing pediatric gastrointestinal and liver diseases. “Gastrointestinal disorders look different in kids than in adults,” she says.

“My philosophy is—do not overdiagnosis,” Dr. Morotti says. “Because I work with children, who will carry a diagnosis for the rest of their life, I try to render the most precise diagnosis possible.”

At Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Morotti is professor of pathology.
