Psychiatry
Yale Medicine is the largest provider of psychiatric services in Connecticut and the leading NIH-funded Department of Psychiatry in the United States. Our department delivers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for the full spectrum of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric conditions including mood and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, personality pathology and associated behavioral dysregulation, psychiatric comorbidity in medical illness, and dementia.
Clinically, our faculty are experienced in social, pharmacologic, psychotherapeutic, rehabilitative, and neuromodulation-based interventions. Our interventional psychiatry experts offer advanced treatments, including ECT and ketamine, for patients with treatment-resistant depressive symptoms. They also offer access to clinical trials when appropriate. Our clinical programs are tightly integrated with research to support continuous improvement in outcomes and adoption of best practices.
Distinguishing Factors
Yale investigators have contributed foundational advances across molecular neuroscience, genetics, translational neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy research, psychiatric rehabilitation, health services research, forensic psychiatry, epidemiology, and health policy. These programs inform clinical pathways and support ongoing innovation across our services.
Specialty clinical and research programs are based at three primary sites: Connecticut Mental Health Center, the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System, and Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. We also provide enhanced psychiatry support to Smilow Cancer Hospital, including dedicated services such as smoking cessation support.
