About 10 percent of women will develop depression after giving birth. In this video, Kimberly Yonkers, MD, a professor of Psychiatry at Yale Medicine, talks about the risk factors, and the signs new moms and families should look out for. She explains the difference between normal sleep deprivation that comes with caring for a newborn and a new mother's inability to sleep because of postpartum depression. Dr. Yonkers also talks about the various therapies used at Yale Medicine to help moms experiencing postpartum depression, including considerations around medication and breastfeeding.
