Observational Medicine

A busy emergency room.
Why Yale Medicine?
  • Our team ensures that patients receive the care they need in any emergency situation.
  • We are establishing new clinical observation units to better care for patients.
  • We observe patients in the emergency department until they are hospitalized or are ready to be discharged.

Across the country, hospital emergency departments are being stretched beyond capacity. Increased emergency room admissions lead to bottlenecking, overcrowding, longer wait times, and inefficient use of resources.

Observation medicine involves the assessment and care of patients who do not meet criteria for inpatient status, but need further evaluation and treatment with anticipated stays of up to 24 hours. Ideally, observation medicine is offered in a dedicated unit under the direction of the emergency department. As the demand for emergency department resources grows, Yale New Haven Hospital is establishing new clinical observation units to ensure that patients seeking emergency services receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
