When children require anesthesia for surgery, it’s essential to put them at ease while putting them to sleep. Dorothy Gaal, MD, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Yale Medicine, works closely with the child and the family to focus on alleviating anxiety due to separation, fear and pain, both before and after a procedure. At Yale Medicine, pediatric anesthesiologists use a multidisciplinary approach. "There may be a series of meetings over the course of several months to make sure that all caregivers, the family and the child are best prepared for their big event," says Dr. Gaal.
