Pain, Silent Cerebral Infarcts, and Cognition in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease (Pain+SCAN) study

  • Study HIC#:2000037807
  • Last Updated:08/20/2025

The purpose of this research study is to understand the relationship between sickle cell-related pain, cognition (the way you think), and silent cerebral infarcts (which are blockages of small vessels in the brain, that do not cause noticeable physical changes. That is why they are referred to as silent) in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD).

If you enroll in the study, you will be asked to: take a cognitive assessment, fill out a pain diary for 14 days, answer questionnaires about your sickle cell pain, and get a Brain MRI.

Compensation of $50 total will be provided.
