Proctocolectomy

Definition

Proctocolectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the colon (large intestine) and rectum, often performed to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, or colorectal cancer. The procedure may be performed using open surgery or minimally invasive techniques, and may involve the creation of an ileostomy or ileoanal pouch to manage waste elimination.
