Peritonitis

Definition

Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs. It is usually caused by a bacterial or fungal infection, often resulting from a rupture or perforation in the abdominal cavity. Peritonitis can be life-threatening if left untreated and requires immediate medical attention.
