Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

Definition

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare, acquired hematological disorder characterized by the destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), blood clots (thrombosis), and impaired bone marrow function. It occurs due to a genetic mutation in hematopoietic stem cells, leading to the production of abnormal red blood cells that are susceptible to attack by the body's immune system.
