Otoacoustic Emissions

Definition

Otoacoustic emissions are sounds generated by the inner ear, specifically the cochlea, in response to sound stimulation. These emissions can be measured and analyzed to assess the function of the outer hair cells in the cochlea, which play a crucial role in hearing. Otoacoustic emissions testing is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to screen for hearing loss, particularly in newborns and infants.
