Islet Cell Transplant

Definition

Islet cell transplant is a medical treatment involving the transplantation of healthy islet cells, which are clusters of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, into a person with type 1 diabetes or severe type 2 diabetes. The goal of this procedure is to restore the patient's ability to produce and regulate insulin, thereby improving blood sugar control and reducing the need for insulin injections.
