Familial Adenomatous Polyposis

Definition

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a hereditary condition characterized by the development of numerous polyps (adenomas) in the lining of the colon and rectum. These polyps can eventually become cancerous if left untreated. FAP is caused by a mutation in the APC gene, which increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
