Barium Enema, Lower GI Series

Definition

A barium enema, also known as a lower gastrointestinal (GI) series, is a diagnostic procedure that involves the use of X-ray imaging to examine the large intestine (colon and rectum). A liquid containing barium is introduced into the rectum, which coats the lining of the colon and rectum, making it easier to visualize any abnormalities or issues in the lower GI tract.
