Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI)

Definition

An auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to individuals who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing and cannot benefit from conventional hearing aids or cochlear implants. The device bypasses the damaged cochlea and auditory nerve, directly stimulating the auditory pathways in the brainstem.
