Biography
Kathleen Koenig is a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatry and mental health, working in child and adolescent behavioral medicine. She provides care for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders.
Koenig works closely with children and their families to address behavioral and emotional challenges, offering strategies to improve social skills and daily functioning. She tailors each intervention to fit a child's unique profile of strengths and areas that need support, always considering how symptoms affect everyday life. "I enjoy getting to know children and understanding their unique stories,” she says.
As an associate research scientist at Yale School of Medicine, Koenig has dedicated her career to understanding gender differences in autism and supporting girls and women with autism spectrum disorders. She has written about the developmental course of autism in girls and teaches medical trainees and professionals how to better support children on the autism spectrum. Her book, Practical Social Skills for Autism Spectrum Disorders: Designing Child-Specific Interventions, was published in 2012.
