Donald “Barry” Boyd, MD, is a Yale Medicine oncologist and hematologist who practices at the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center at Greenwich.

Dr. Boyd founded the Integrative Medicine Program at Greenwich Hospital. He currently leads efforts at the hospital to provide nutritional support for cancer patients.

He believes traditional cancer care—chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy—should be combined with good nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices. He provides a cancer recovery plan for patients, which includes practical advice on nutrition and exercise along with stress management techniques to help his patients throughout their treatment.

“What integrative cancer care should be doing is integrating knowledge from all aspects of medicine. The key is not to think ‘outside the box,’ but to create a ‘bigger box.’”

Dr. Boyd’s research focuses on the use of adjunct therapies in cancer survivors, the role of obesity and insulin resistance in cancer recurrence and survival, and the relationship between stress, insulin resistance, and cancer. Dr. Boyd is an assistant professor of medicine (medical oncology) at Yale School of Medicine.
