We are asking you to take part in a research study because you have experienced a traumatic event.  The purpose of this research study is to understand how our brains learn different kinds of information.

  • Study procedures will include: an intake visit to complete questionnaires and one MRI scan
  • 2 visits are required.
  • These visits will take about 4-5 hours total.
  • Age18 years - 45 years

Trial Purpose and Description

We are asking you to take part in a research study because you have experienced a traumatic event.  The purpose of this research study is to understand how our brains learn different kinds of information.

  • Study procedures will include: an intake visit to complete questionnaires and one MRI scan
  • 2 visits are required.
  • These visits will take about 4-5 hours total.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
- 18-45 years old
- Fluent in English
- History of traumatic event(s); in other words, exposed to death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, in the following way(s):
- direct exposure
- witnessing the trauma
- learning that a relative or close friend was exposed to trauma
- experiencing repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of
the traumatic event(s) (e.g., first responders)
- Current diagnosis of PTSD OR no current/lifetime diagnosis of PTSD
- Right-handed

Exclusion Criteria:
- Moderate/severe traumatic brain injury
- Bipolar disorder
- Learning disability (e.g., ADHD)
- Neurological disorders
- Use of antipsychotic, hypnotic, sedative, or anti-addiction medications
- Current severe substance use disorder
- Metal in body (MRI safety)
