WAVE T1D: A Randomized Phase 1/2 Trial of Low Dose Anti-thymocyte Globulin (ATG) with Subsequent Adalimumab or Verapamil in New Onset Type 1 Diabetes

Purpose of the study:
This multi-center randomized controlled trial will assess the safety and efficacy of antithymocyte globulin (ATG) followed by either adalimumab or verapamil in preserving insulin secretion for 2 years in persons aged 9 to <21 with recent-onset stage 3 T1D.
What participation involves:
If you enroll, you will be in the study for up to 3 years. During that time, there will be about 12 office visits and at least 6 scheduled phone contacts. Study activities include:
• 2 IV infusions of ATG
• Under-the-skin (subcutaneous) injections every other week (adalimumab or placebo) or taking a daily pill (verapamil or placebo)
• Wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)
• Physical exams
• Electrocardiograms (ECGs) to check heart rhythm
• Blood draws for lab tests
• Daily insulin recording
• Mixed Meal Tolerance Tests (MMTTs) to measure how well the pancreas makes insulin

Eligibility Criteria
You may be eligible if you have been diagnosed with stage 3 type 1 diabetes within the past 6 months. Additional eligibility criteria includes:
- Be between the ages of 9 and 20 years old
- Weigh more than 66 pounds
- Be able to read and understand English or Spanish
- Use only insulin to control blood sugar (no other glucose-lowering medicines)
