Vertebral osteomyelitis is an infection of the vertebral bones in the spine, characterized by inflammation and destruction of bone tissue. It is typically caused by bacteria, but can also be caused by fungi or other microorganisms. The infection may spread from other parts of the body or result from direct inoculation during spinal surgery or invasive procedures.
