Total Body Irradiation

Definition

Total body irradiation (TBI) is a medical treatment that involves the administration of ionizing radiation to the entire body. It is commonly used as a preparative regimen for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, particularly for conditions such as leukemia and lymphoma. The goal of TBI is to destroy cancerous cells and suppress the immune system to prevent rejection of the transplanted stem cells.
