Definition
Spondylolysis is a stress fracture or defect in the pars interarticularis of the vertebral arch, often affecting the lower back. Spondylolisthesis is a related condition where a vertebra slips forward over the vertebra below it, which can result from spondylolysis or other causes such as degenerative changes, trauma, or congenital abnormalities.
