Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Definition

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal condition that primarily affects premature infants. It involves inflammation and damage to the intestinal tissue, which can lead to necrosis (death) of the affected areas. NEC can cause severe complications, including infection, sepsis, and intestinal perforation, and may require surgical intervention.
