Myotonic Dystrophy

Definition

Myotonic dystrophy is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting, affecting both skeletal and smooth muscles. It is caused by mutations in the DMPK or CNBP genes, leading to abnormal muscle contractions and difficulty in relaxing muscles after use. The condition can also affect other body systems, including the heart, eyes, and endocrine system.
