Mitral Valve Disease

Definition

Mitral valve disease is a condition affecting the mitral valve, which is responsible for regulating blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. The disease can involve either a narrowing of the valve (mitral stenosis) or a leakage of blood backward through the valve (mitral regurgitation). This can lead to reduced blood flow, increased pressure in the heart, and eventually heart failure if left untreated.
