Malignant Otitis Externa
Definition
Malignant otitis externa is a severe infection of the outer ear and surrounding bone and tissue, typically caused by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium. It is more common in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with diabetes or HIV. If left untreated, the infection can spread to nearby structures, including the skull base and cranial nerves, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.
