Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

Definition

An intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a medical device used to temporarily support the heart's function by increasing blood flow and reducing the workload on the heart. It consists of a catheter with an inflatable balloon at its tip, which is inserted into the aorta and inflated and deflated in sync with the cardiac cycle, improving coronary artery perfusion and reducing the heart's oxygen demand.
