Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

Definition

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small, battery-powered device placed under the skin in the chest area to monitor and regulate the heart's electrical activity. It detects and treats life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) by delivering electrical shocks or pacing therapy to restore a normal heartbeat.
