Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a contagious viral infection commonly affecting young children. It is caused by enteroviruses, such as coxsackievirus A16 and A6. It is characterized by the appearance of sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet, and may also cause fever, sore throat, muscle aches, pain when swallowing, and loss of appetite.
