Fifth disease, also known as erythema infectiosum, is a mild viral illness caused by human parvovirus B19. It commonly affects children and is characterized by a distinctive red rash on the cheeks, giving the appearance of slapped cheeks, which may spread to the body and limbs. The infection may also cause mild fever, joint pain, and flu-like symptoms.
