Botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition caused by the toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. These toxins interfere with the normal function of nerves, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Botulism can occur through ingestion of contaminated food, wound infections, or intestinal colonization in infants.
