Traumatic Stress and Recovery Services

The Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) at Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) helps children and teens after they experience a violent, overwhelming, or otherwise traumatic event. CFTSI treatment reduces trauma symptoms and minimizes or prevents the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Services

Children attend 5-8 sessions CFTSI with their parent(s). Our providers talk with the child about the event with the supportive presence of a parent. Data has shown that when this intervention is implemented quickly, it prevents PTSD about 50% of the time.

Children and teens benefit from participating in CFTSI after a variety of traumatic events. This may include sexual abuse, physical abuse, community violence, domestic violence, rape, assault, car accidents, dog bites, animal attacks, unintentional injuries, extreme weather conditions, and other situations that can lead to PTSD.

If a child or teen lives in an area that doesn’t have CFTSI offered nearby, they may come to the YCSC for the intervention. To receive ongoing treatment, families must live in the Greater New Haven area.
