Gynecologic Cancer Prevention Clinic
The Discovery to Cure program began in 2003 to provide women with new methods for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of gynecologic cancers. The direct connection between our research labs and clinical patient care at Smilow Cancer Hospital makes Discovery to Cure the leading center for women’s reproductive cancer research and treatment.
Researchers and clinicians are at the forefront of discovering new treatment options for women with reproductive cancers. Our multidisciplinary team works together to create a personalized care plan for each patient. After initial risk assessment, women who are at increased risk of developing gynecologic cancers can be followed in the Discovery to Cure Clinic for surveillance and cancer prevention. Our team members work closely with other specialists in the Smilow Cancer Genetics & Prevention Program to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to cancer prevention and early detection. We also work with your regular gynecological care provider to ensure the best plan for your health.
What types of patients do we see?
Individuals with a:
- Genetic predisposition to gynecologic cancer, such as an inherited mutation in the BRCA genes or other gynecologic cancer-related genes
- Family history of ovarian or fallopian tube cancer
- Personal history of hormone-sensitive breast cancer who may benefit from surgery to reduce their risk of cancer recurrence
What to expect from your appointments:
At your first visit, providers will review your personal and family medical history, including any known cancers and their treatment, as well as any genetic testing you have had. Depending on your history and the care plan developed for you, you may have a gynecologic exam, biopsy, or additional procedure.
Once we have gathered the necessary information from you, the team will develop a plan and discuss your options for cancer risk reduction. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before your visit ends. If surgery is planned, pre-operative instructions will be provided.
