Our research covers a broad range of areas that reflects the diversity of state-of-the-art neuroscience research. Our programs range from translational efforts based on work with patients to exploring central nervous system function at the cellular and molecular level.
Our research scientists are pioneers and contribute to the fundamental understanding of neurological diseases and the development of new and effective treatments. We are committed to translating new research into clinical therapies. Our efforts have been recognized by the National Institutes of Health with numerous grants and awards. These include, but are not limited to:
• Serving as a leading center worldwide for the genetics and genomics of brain tumors and aneurysms
• Proteomic (protein) profiles in temporal lobe epilepsy and improved surgical techniques for medically intractable epilepsy
• Understanding the mechanisms of aging in the olfactory system
• Discovering targets of oncolytic viruses that infect and break down cancer cells, understanding the role of immunotherapy, and the development and use of nanotechnology for the treatment of brain tumors
• Studying the regulation of ion transport across cell membranes in the central nervous system and how genetically encoded alterations can contribute to developmental disorders
• The use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for psychiatric disorders
• The development of high-field methods for magnetic resonance imaging
• Deciphering a technique to prevent intraventricular hemorrhage, or bleeding into the fluid-filled areas of the brain, in preterm infants
